ALABAMA PUBLIC SCHOOLS
WIN NATIONAL AWARDS

MONTGOMERY, AL - Three Alabama public schools – out of only seven middle schools in the nation – will receive the MMGW (Making Middle Grades Work) Gold Award for Improved Achievement from the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB):

  • Hokes Bluff Middle School; Marguerite W. Early, principal; Michael A. Bailey, superintendent, Etowah County Schools
  • Fairview Middle School; Susan Patterson, principal; Hank Allen, superintendent, Cullman County Schools
  • Athens Middle School; Mike Bishop, principal; Orman Bridges, superintendent, Athens City Schools

Dave Spence, SREB president, will present the awards at the annual High Schools That Work Staff Development Conference in Atlanta on July 8. The Gold Award, a national award for school improvement, honors schools that made improvements in reading, mathematics and science on the Middle Grades Assessment from 2006 to 2008. These schools also met the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) criteria of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

“These schools have shown what can be accomplished to raise student achievement by deeply implementing the Making Middle Grades Work model,” said Gene Bottoms, SREB senior vice president. “They illustrate the spirit of change and the gains in performance that Making Middle Grades Work advocates to get students ready for tough academic and career/technical courses in high school.”

More than 350 middle grades schools in 22 states participate in the MMGW school improvement initiative to create a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement in preparing middle grades students for challenging high school courses and productive careers. Dorothy Dolasky is MMGW State Coordinator for the Alabama Department of Education.
