collect personal information from visitors.
FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (PL93-280),
known as “FERPA” or the “Buckley Amendment,” establishes student and
parent rights with regard to student records. The following are the
major requirements:
Student records are kept confidential
Parents are allowed access to their child’s educational records
Parents are allowed to challenge information kept in their child’s
records
Parents and adult students are informed of their rights under the
act, and
The release of records is barred to third parties without the
written consent except to school district employees possessing
legitimate interest and state and national educational research
organizations.
All information, such as grades or test scores, requires written
consent. However, directory information may be disclosed without
written consent. Directory information is defined as:
The student’s name
Address
Telephone number
Date and place of birth
Major field of student
Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
Weight and height of members of athletic teams
Dates of attendance
Degrees and awards received and
Other similar information as determined by board policy |
