Tips for Band Camp

The summers down here in the South are always extremely hot, so here are some tips/suggestions to help your child “survive” band camp.

 ·        Always be on time for all practices. Arrive 10 minutes early if possible. If you are going to be late, please call your section leader or drum major.
·        Do not be afraid to ask for help! Section leaders and officers are there to help you.
·        Keep your instrument in good shape and have all the supplies necessary to be successful. (Valve oil, reeds, flip folder, clothes pins, sticks, etc.)
·        Do not stay inside the entire summer leading up to band camp. Go outside often and let yourself get acclimated to the heat. Don’t become dependent on the air conditioner!
·        Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing to camp. No spaghetti straps, sports bras, or such are permitted. Wear a comfortable pair of tennis shoes (sandals, flipflops, “crocs”, Birkenstocks, and boots are not acceptable) Be sure to bring a cap/hat and sunglasses with you to camp. Also, bring plenty of sunscreen (not suntan lotion) and a towel to lay your instrument on.
·        Bring your lunch daily and plenty of water and/or sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade, Propel, etc.) to keep hydrated. We will have coolers of water for your child in case they forget to bring drinks with them. CARBONATED DRINKS are prohibited! The combination of heat and carbonated drinks may make your child extremely sick. You also may want to bring some lip balm (Carmex or DCT) to keep your lips moist and healthy.
·        Come in to camp with a positive, fun attitude willing to work! Don’t be critical of other band members or sections. We are all on the same team and must work together to be successful!
·        Any other questions? Please call me: cell # (256) 338-8815. If I don’t answer, please leave your name, number, and a brief message. Thanks!
