KINDERGARTEN GOALS

 

The following is a list of the academic standard objectives required for your child to master by the end of kindergarten.  These skills will contribute to our child's success in kindergarten and prepare him/her for first grade.  These skills form the basis of whether your child will be ready to be promoted to first grade.  Please be aware that these are not the only skills to be taught during the school year.  Handwriting can be a difficult skill for some students.  It is a very important skill and should be practiced daily.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

LANGUAGE/READING SKILLS

RECITE THE ALPHABET IN ORDER

WRITE FIRST & LAST NAME

WRITE LETTERS & NUMBERS NOT IN ALPHABETICAL OR SEQUENTIAL ORDER

RECOGNIZES ALL LETTERS BY SIGHT AND KNOWS SOUND OF EACH LETTER

ABLE TO BLEND CONSONANT-VOWEL-CONSONANT SOUNDS ORALLY TO         

     MAKE WORDS (EX. C-A-T = CAT, M-E-N= MEN)

KNOWS THAT VOWELS PLAY A SPECIAL PART IN ALL WORDS.

RECOGNIZES SIGHT WORDS (from Dolch Word list)

READ (SIMPLE DECODABLE STORIES)

GIVE NUMBER OF SYLLABLES & SOUNDS IN A WORD

GIVE EXAMPLES OF OPPOSITES; RHYMING WORDS AND RECOGNIZE IF WORDS 

     RHYME

DEVELOP READING READINESS SKILLS SUCH AS CUTTING, PASTING, COLORING, 

     HOLDING A PENCIL CORRECTLY, AND TRACING.

RECOGNIZE THE 8 BASIC COLORS AND COLOR WORDS.

SHOW THE SPACING BETWEEN WORDS.

KNOW WHAT THE FOLLOWING DETAILS CONCERNING A BOOK:      

      WHAT A TITLE IS

        WHAT AN AUTHOR DOES

        WHAT AN ILLUSTRATOR DOES

        WHAT A PUBLISHER DOES

        WHAT THE SPINE OF THE BOOK IS

RETELL A STORY USING DETAILS

UNDERSTAND SIMPLE STORY STRUCTURE (BEGINNING, MIDDLE, & END).

DISTINGUISH BETWEEN FICTION AND NONFICTION.

DEMONSTRATE THE CORRECT WAY TO READ A BOOK WITH YOUR FINGER (FROM

     LEFT TO RIGHT, TOP TO BOTTOM).

FOLLOW DIRECTIONS IN A GROUP SETTING.

PARTICIPATE IN LISTENING AND COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES.

IMITATE THE INITIAL AND ENDING SOUNDS OF A WORD.

USE POSITIONAL WORDS.

SHARE INFORMATION AND IDEAS.
