Christmas Love

12-16-09

The Fairview Middle School Student Council (Aggie Ambassadors) sponsors a family for Christmas each year.  One family is chosen from the Fairview School community. "I really enjoy being a part of the Christmas Love project this year at Fairview Middle School.  It was such a wonderful  feeling to help the children of our community," says Sadie Boyd, FMS Student Council President.

The Ambassadors meet on a specific night in town and are given a wish list, a budget, and a calculator.  They are then sent to find the best gifts.  This opportunity is a great way for young students to learn a valuable lesson in life about helping others. "It is very encouraging to see the Ambassadors enjoy serving others in their own school," says Leslie Arnold, the sponsor for the Ambassadors.

Service Learning

09-24-09

FMS—Hot, Hot, Hot…Spreading the Fire! That is the theme that surrounds the hallways of Fairview Middle School as they continue to reach beyond 212° where water goes from hot to boiling.  One degree makes the difference between water and steam.  We want to go that extra degree in all we do at Fairview Middle School.  In an effort to do this, Fairview 6th graders just completed a literature circle project, coordinated by media specialist Kim Mullican, in collaboration with Language Arts teacher Rebecca Gregory.  This literature circle project allowed students the opportunity to read novels related to topics involving service learning.

Initiated by a Learn and Serve Grant, students were able to discuss weekly, ideas and suggestions in which they could take part in helping themselves while serving others. To supplement this project, guest speakers came to talk to the 6th graders about the areas of serving learning brought out in the literature circles. Elderly, special needs, cultural differences, disaster preparedness, and environment conservation were the areas presented.

When students were asked about their most enjoyable part of this experience, Kenzie Fox really enjoyed hearing about ways to volunteer with special needs.  She liked the whole project experience of being able to talk to her peers about the book they were reading together.  Austin Fletcher also liked the volunteer opportunities of becoming a buddy for a special needs peer, especially at the Special Olympics in Cullman or at Field of Miracles. He enjoyed the whole literature circle experience in that he really liked the book he read, Letters from Rifka, and probably would not have read something like that on his own.

The project will end with final group presentations of different components of the novels.  7th and 8th graders will also participate in similar activities throughout the school year.
