HOMEWORK POLICIES

2007-2008

6th English- Assignments that are not completed in class should be finished at home.  Please encourage your child to use their class time wisely so that they will not have homework.

Academic Lab- Definitions are assigned on Monday with ample time to complete in class. They will be due on Friday. Spelling tests are given each Friday.

7th English- Language assignments are given daily. Work that is not completed in class should be finished at home to be checked the next day. Vocabulary and spelling words that are often assigned periodically, and should be studied at home as well as in class. Classic novels are often assigned for independent reading. The student is expected to read two or three chapters’ key parts of the assignment, but the majority of the reading is to be done at home. Reading check tests are given regularly. Reading checks, spelling and vocabulary tests, writing and grammar assignments make up the student’s language grade.

8th English- Eighth grade English consists primarily of reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar.

Often grammar exercises are begun in class, but must be finished for homework if they are not completed. Anew list of vocabulary words or spelling words is given each week.  These are to be studied both at school and at home. The class reads several novels during the school year. On Mondays, we read and discuss the week’s reading assignment, which averages two chapters each week. Usually, at least one chapter is read in class, but the student is expected to finish reading the assignment independently, answer study guide questions, and be prepared for a test on each Friday. Writing assignments of various types are done, both ion class and at home. This year each student is doing a writing journal, using figurative language devices in their own poems and short stories. They will also illustrate their writing with their own artwork. Much of the work in their writing journals will be done at home.

Reading - Any class work that is not competed in class should be finished at home.  AR books should be read at home so that in the six-weeks grading period each student will have the set amount of points amount of points earned.  Students should study from their notebook for quiz on stories that are read and vocabulary words that are learned.

Science - Adequate time is given during class to complete assignments, but they must be finished at home if not during class. Readings may be assigned for homework.  Most assignments can be completed in thirty minutes.

Math- It is the position of the math department of Good Hope Middle School that homework is absolutely necessary.  We propose that math homework will be assigned at least three or four nights per week.  Homework assignments will not be excessive (10-15 problems).  Homework will be graded on accountability, usually not heavily on accuracy except in some cases.  Completion of homework assignments will count as a certain percentage of the final grade.

Social StudiesUsually no homework is given.  In the case that homework is given, if the student works efficiently there should be enough time to complete the assignment during class.  When homework is given it will be no more than 1-3 times per week.
