 Everyone on this planet just wants to be included in some group. Whether it be at school, home or work, we look for others like ourselves. Humans need acceptance and a sense of belonging. My goal as guidance counselor is to help every student see their worth in this world in themselves.

The Power of a Smile
If you can take the broken dreams of men
And help them fit the pieces back again;
If you can sit with sorrow for a while
And help disperse the storm clouds with a smile,
The sun will shine, not in their lives alone;
Its light will be reflected in your own.
When all the walls you built with patient care
You wake someday to find no longer there,
When all your hopes and plans have gone away,
If you still smile and hold your head up high,
Your friends will find worthy of their trust
And help rebuild the ruins from the dust.

Self- Esteem for Children

 Self -esteem is a necessary component of a person’s happiness. High self-esteem allows a person to maintain good relationships and reach higher levels of achievement. Here are fourteen ways to build self-esteem in children:

  1. Respond to each child individually-call him/her by name.
  2. Take time to talk with your child about the things that are important to him/her.
  3. Use positive suggestions whenever possible. This reinforces the behaviors you like. Example: Negative: Don’t throw the ball. Positive: Let’s roll the ball.
  4. Keep your expectations consistent with your child’s stage of development and ability. Be realistic.
  5. Give your child the opportunity to make choices and take responsibilities that fit his/her stage of development.
  6. Provide opportunities for the child to succeed. Challenge him/her when the chances of success are good.
  7. Give your child plenty of quality time. This is more important and memorable than quantity.
  8. Compare your child’s skills against his/her previous accomplishments. Don’t compare him/her to other children, especially siblings.
  9. Avoid shaming and labeling your child. Example: lazy, stupid, no good
  10. Be a good model. Children learn the most through watching adults.
  11. React to the behavior instead of the child.
  12. Give your child recognition for his/her accomplishments.
  13. Accept your child’s feelings. Negative or Positive without judging your child.
  14. Hug and say, “I love you unconditionally!” ---- REPEAT DAILY
