West Point Elementary School

Home Up Principal Assistant Principal Guidance

We are both glad to be a part of West Point Elementary School.  The teachers and staff here are dedicated individuals who are here to help students reach their greatest learning potential.  Parents work very hard to assist with school functions and fundraisers that enable us to provide for the needs of our students.  Our parents, community, teachers, and students work together to help make our school successful.

This year our school system is focusing on the improvement of student writing.  Each year our fifth grade students take the Alabama Direct Writing Assessment (as do all fifth graders across the state).  Our goal is that over fifty percent of our students will score on levels III and IV of this test.  Students and teachers are working very hard to reach this goal.

Our technology program continues to grow.  We now have 2 to 3 computers in each classroom as well as two computer labs.

Students at West Point Elementary are motivated to read using the Accelerated Reading Program in which they read books and then take tests on the computer.  They accumulate points for reading these books and are rewarded when they achieve set levels.  This not only motivates students to read but also helps to increase their reading levels and comprehension.  New books and tests are ordered for students each year.

It is a privilege to work with such a great group of people.  We appreciate your support and dedication to West Point Elementary School.

Sincerely,

Shireen Coleman, Principal
