The Gerdye Heck Howell Library Media Center was dedicated on Sunday, April 24, 1994. The dedication was a tribute to Mrs. Gerdye Heck Howell who taught school in Cullman County and Arab for 40 years. Twenty-seven of those years were spent teaching fifth grade at West Point School. The Gerdye Heck Howell Library Media Center serves approximately 800 students and 50 teachers in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Flexible scheduling is used in our library media center. Flexible scheduling allows the use of the library media center at the point of need by individuals, small groups, and/or classes through planning by the classroom teacher and library media specialist to integrate information skills and literature into classroom curriculum. With flexible scheduling, students are allowed to check-out and return books at any time during the school day. Of course, students must have their teacher's permission before leaving the classroom.
