Book fairs are held the first two weeks of September, December, and April.
Students and teachers are encouraged to save Box Tops For Education. During the 2001-02 school year we earned $632.50 from box tops. The class collecting the most box tops in each grade earns a cupcake party at the end of the year.
Students and teachers are encouraged to save Campbell Soup labels. We normally collect over 10,000 labels each year. We use the labels to earn cassette tape recorders, projectors, etc. The class in K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 saving the most labels is awarded an ice cream party at the end of the school year.
Students are asked to turn in addresses of friends and relatives. For each completed address our school receives a monetary credit. We have used these credits to add to our video collection in the library.
This event is held yearly at our school. The purpose is to allow our students to hear and see real authors and illustrators. We have been fortunate to have the following visitors in the past few years: Bruce Dupree, Ruth Heller, Jerry Pallotta, Ralph Masiello, John Erickson, John Archambault, and David Plummer.
This year our Author-O-Rama is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, 2003. Our guest this year is Mike Artell. He has written over 35 books and is an author, illustrator, and cartoonist.
The Library has sponsored the Math-A-Thon for many years. Students ask people to sponsor them for working math problems. The money raised goes to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. For the past several years, our students have raised over $2,000.00 each year for St. Jude.
West Point Elementary had 40 participants in this year's Math-A-Thon. These students raised $2,171.32 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Great job boys and girls! Jordan Campbell raised the most money ($300) ads will receive the CD boom box.
We celebrate Book Week each year with activities such as Book Character Day, Alabama/Auburn Day, Mickey Mouse's Birthday, Read-A-Thon, and Storytelling.
Dr. Seuss's birthday is celebrated each year on March 1. Many teachers invite parents, students, etc. to come and read their favorite books or a Dr. Seuss book to the class. The day would not be complete without a visit from the "Cat In The Hat" himself!
